Effect of reproduction on escape responses, metabolic rates and muscle mitochondrial properties in the scallop Placopecten magellanicus ArchiMer
Kraffe, E; Tremblay, R; Belvin, S; Le Coz, Jean-rene; Marty, Y; Guderley, H.
In scallops, gametogenesis and spawning can diminish the metabolic capacities of the adductor muscle and reduce escape response performance. To evaluate potential mechanisms underlying this compromise between reproductive investment and escape response, we examined the impact of reproductive stage (pre-spawned, spawned and reproductive quiescent) of the giant scallop, Placopecten magellanicus, on behavioural (i.e., escape responses), physiological (i.e., standard metabolic rates and metabolic rates after complete fatigue) and mitochondrial capacities (i.e., oxidative rates) and composition. Escape responses changed markedly with reproductive investment, with spawned scallops making fewer claps and having shorter responses than pre-spawned or...

Lipids, proteins, phenolic composition, antioxidant and antibacterial activities of seeds of peanuts (Arachis hypogaea l) cultivated in Tunisia Biol. Res.
Sebei,Khaled; Gnouma,Asma; Herchi,Wahid; Sakouhi,Faouzi; Boukhchina,Sadok.
Fatty acid composition of peanut seed oil in four varieties cultivated in Tunisia showed that linoleic (C18:2), oleic (C18:1) and palmitic (C16) acids account for more than 84% for Chounfakhi and Massriya and for more than 85% of the total fatty acids of Trabilsia and Sinya seed oil respectively. Seed oil contents were significantly different (P ≤ 0.05) and did not exceed 48%. The study of total phenolics revealed that Chounfakhi contained more total phenolics (2.1 mg GAE/g DW), followed by the Massriya and Sinya cultivars (1.35 mg GAE/g DW for each); Trabilsia presented the lowest total phenolic content with 1 mg GAE/g DW. Considerable antiradical ability was found, especially in the Trabilsia peanut seed cultivar (IC50 = 1550 μg/ml),...

Organic matter composition in the sediment of three Brazilian coastal lagoons: district of Macaé, Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) Anais da ABC (AABC)
Zink,Klaus-Gerhard; Furtado,André L. S.; Casper,Peter; Schwark,Lorenz.
Freshwater lagoons comprise important coastal ecosystems and natural buffers between urbanized land areas and open ocean in the Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. Studies of sediment and water chemistry, zooplankton and bacterial communities to assess the extent of anthropogenic disturbance are available. Here we contribute with an organic-geochemical approach supplemented by some microbiological aspects to complete the characterization of these lagoonal ecosystems. Bulk organic matter and extractable lipids (aliphatic hydrocarbons, alcohols and fatty acids, sterols) were investigated from two locations per lagoon: at the seaward site and landward ends - and at two depth intervals (0-3 and 3-6 cm) per site. Urbanized Imboacica Lagoon received increased...

Phytosterols isolated from endophytic fungus Colletotrichum gloeosporioides(Melanconiaceae) Acta Amazonica
CARVALHO,Josiwander Miranda; PAIXÃO,Luanna Karyna Olimpio da; DOLABELA,Maria Fani; MARINHO,Patrícia Santana Barbosa; MARINHO,Andrey Moacir do Rosario.
ABSTRACTEndophytic fungi are fungi that colonize internal tissues of plants. There are few studies of compounds isolated from endophytic fungi of Amazon plants. Thus, the aim this study was the isolation and structural identification of sitosterol (1), stigmasterol (2), sitostenone (3), squalene (4), ergosterol (5) and ergosterol peroxide (6) from fungus Colletotrichum gloeosporioidesisolated as endophytic from Virola michelli, a typical Amazon plant, used in folk medicine against skin infection. Compounds were isolated by chromatography column on silica and identified by 1H and 13C NMR and MS. The presence of phytosterols in fungi is rare and this is the first report of the isolation of the phytosterols sitosterol, stigmasterol and sitostenone from the...

Trophic ecology of suspension-feeding bivalves inhabiting a north-eastern Pacific coastal lagoon: Comparison of different biomarkers ArchiMer
Mathieu-resuge, Margaux; Kraffe, Edouard; Le Grand, Fabienne; Boens, Andy; Bideau, Antoine; Lluch-cota, Salvador E.; Racotta, Ilie S.; Schaal, Gauthier.
Understanding the nature and origins of food sources supporting coastal lagoon-inhabiting organisms is necessary to evaluate the ecological status of such ecosystems. The trophic ecology of a bivalve specie Spondylus crassisquama was studied in the Ojo de Liebre lagoon (Baja California, Mexico), combining stable isotope (SI), fatty acid (FA) and sterols analyses along a transect under oceanic influences. The second objective of the study was to investigate if sterols compositions give complementary information to those obtained from FA and SI. Temporal and spatial patterns of the three biomarkers in bivalve tissues suggest oceanic inputs at the mouth of the lagoon, while the inner station was characterized by a contribution of local sources including an...
